In the dark, we hide
we fear the things we
cannot see
In the dark, we do the
things we hide
from others.
We lay awake
in the dark
Sleep evades and anxieties
toss us about,
our minds wild with
all the things
in the dark.
We feel alone
in the dark
crushing weight steals
our breath
Fingers groping for the light
to chase the
shadows.
In the dark, we lose our way
Feet stumble, faltering,
Slipping, falling
in the dark.
We create our own luminaries
to distract us from the dark
Shades of gray,
weak light
that float away on the tide
and leave us again
in the dark.
In this the darkest
of days
when the earth tilts
away from the sun
and we tilt
our faces to find
light.
We hear of the rumors
and tumors
and turmoil.
Of the pain and the
stain of dark
over it all.
And we weep for the broken
and unspoken sorrow
for the one who
couldn’t
plod through
the dark
of it all.
Should we despair
as though
Love doesn’t care
to see us through
to the light?
We are lost in sadness
deep darkness,
heavy heart
and yearning,
yearning for the
Light.
A Light has come to
to dispel the fear,
but we wrap
ourselves in the
cloak we know
We refuse
the Light
but hate the
dark.
But how like God
to send his Son
when the world
is at its
darkest.
The Child of stall and manger
born to disperse
our darkness.
Immanuel, God with us,
come to heal our
brokenness, come
to be in our
pain.
The Light of the world,
come to bring peace
and hope to a world
lost in the
dark.
More than the stuff of
fairytales and jolly
Christmas songs
Jesus, the Way,
the Truth and
The Light.
