Solve the “what to wear?” struggle

I have always loved fashion. I think I inherited that love from my mom. It was common to come home from school to see mom sitting at the sewing machine, creating a skirt, dress, jacket, or pants… and she was good at it! In my younger years, much of my clothes were created by her. People would often ask her, “Sarah, do you have time to make me a skirt?”  And she would.

Growing up, I lived in a fairly remote community, the nearest mall being about a 5-hour drive away.  So I didn’t have the luxury of browsing stores; I did my browsing on the floor, surrounded by Sears catalogues. And I would dream, and circle, and sometimes I could order.   That was our version of Amazon.

I remember a particular unique outfit that I got. No one else in school had anything like it. The pants were bright pink corduroy with bright pink suspenders. I wore a short, light pink t-shirt underneath a bright black and pink plaid shirt. On top of my eighties, permed hair, I wore a beret. Yes, I was a sight. And yes, I’m sure I caused a few heads to turn. Not necessarily in a good way… but I thought I was pretty cool and brave!

I still like fashion. I still don’t mind trying outfits that others might consider “different.”  I embrace my quirkiness!

It’s important to feel good about what you wear. When you feel good about your outfit, you feel more confident to tackle the day!  Sure some days I wear something just so that I have clothes on. Other days I like to “style” what I wear.

I say let’s bring back our good dressing habits and dress to make ourselves feel good and confident!

This past year has had many of us “unfriend” our closets.  We have not had many occasions to wear outfits unless you call sweatpants and a teeshirt an outfit. I say let’s bring back our good dressing habits and dress to make ourselves feel good and confident!

A while back, I came across some of MARCIA RAMSLAND’s work on organizing and time management skills, and she was suggesting a way to help with the “what to wear conundrum.”  Her idea was to hang pictures inside your closet of you wearing outfits you have put together and like.

How many times don’t you find yourself standing by your closet, thinking, “What did I put with these pants again?”

I took this idea and made it my own. When I have time, I like to play around with outfits, trying different pieces together that I might not usually pair. If I come up with something that I like, I will snap a picture on my phone and save it to my favourites.  You can also make up a folder and call it “what to wear,” so you can easily find it back. Now when you are in a hurry in the morning, you can quickly pull up your pictures, scroll through and find something that you have previously taken the time to put together.

  1. This was fun! I had a mom that sewed, I have her Singer sewing machine. Such a sweet memory of your mom. I struggle with mixing it up when it comes to unusual pairing of clothes. I recently joined Stitch Fix and was pleased with my first box!
