What is the potential for my Child with Down Syndrome?

Kids with Down syndrome will not be able to do things that other kids can.

I’m sure if you have a child with Down Syndrome, this is not something you like to be told. It doesn’t give you hope for your child’s future. The fact is, they may not do some things that other kids do, but they may also do things other kids can’t do. Did you know that Reegan does things that I don’t know how to do?  Let me give you a few examples.

I love to cheer her on, but don’t make me go in the deep end!  I can’t swim!

When Reegan was really little, she started watching signing videos with “Alex and Leah.”  That was a great introduction to sign language, and with the help of Aunti Rose, she continued and started signing songs in church.  It is beautiful to watch her sign the words, adding a deeper dimension to worship.  This is something she has learned from Aunti Rose because I don’t know how to sign.  But it makes me so proud to see her contribute to the church service and watch the expression she puts into the songs.

the expression, in the movement of her hands as she signs the words, adds a deeper meaning to the song

Going through challenges and personal struggle makes anyone more resilient.  Being a person with a special need can come with many health and personal struggles.  Things don’t come easy; success is fought for.  And through the struggle and the fight emerges a strong individual.

Do we see that?  Does society see the strong individual, that has probably endured way more than most, just to have a fighting chance at a good life?

It’s easy to see the disability and look past the strength that has brought that person to where they are.

Reegan has had her share of struggles, but she is a fighter and has shown great resilience.  Her challenges have made her a stronger, more determined person.  Even in her countless hospital stays and surgeries, she shows me what strength looks like.  You do the hard thing, and you keep doing the hard thing…and you don’t give up.

Sometimes we hold to the false notion that life should be easy to be good.

Maybe life can be good even when it has challenges.  That is what Reegan is showing me.  Her life has had many hard-fought battles, but it’s good!  She loves life and embraces it with everything in her being!  I may need to follow her lead.
